The gift of a smile (poem)

The gift of a smile

This poem looks at the power that a smile has for making this world a better place and how it can reach out to others when words are hard to find, crossing the barriers of language and culture.

The gift of a smile

A smile can bring forgiveness and a healing to the heart.
A chance to bring a nearness to those who are far apart.
A chance to bridge a divide and for hope to start again,
Love and joy it cannot hide, nor can bitter words remain.

A smile can save a moment, a key to tensions door,
A moving to atonement, a chance to reassure.
It gives a silent greeting to a stranger who’s in need,
Eases stress in a meeting and causes fear to recede.

A smile can bring happiness to those who are feeling low,
Release them from their sadness and help their spirit grow.
Help an injured soul to mend and to heal their pain within,
Brings anger to an end, so a better life can begin.

Because they lived (a poem for remembrance day)

Lest we forget

Because they lived

Because they lived and chose to fight,
In a war fought on foreign land.
We have the freedom and the right,
To choose where we can stand.

They gave to us their tomorrow,
For a future they would never see.
They lived in a time of needless sorrow,
Their sacrifice given for you and me.

Remember them with respect as they lay still,
Under the fields where the red poppies grow.
For, from their courage and their strength of will,
They gave to us the world that we all know.

A cat in the home

A cat in the home

Cats are lovely animals but are notorious for getting in the way and deciding to live their life on their terms. This poem reflects that relationship with us humans:

Excuse the paw prints across the page,
And the tear down on the right.
But the cat just took centre stage,
And with this page picked a fight.

Excuse that old well-worn mat,
Sitting beside the rocking chair.
But it is a favourite of the cat,
And she likes to sleep just there.

Excuse the state of the kitchen floor,
Here, I just give it a clean.
But the cat came in the back door,
And left her footprints on the scene.

But I won’t ask you to excuse the cat,
Nor the presence of her fur.
So give her a stroke where she has sat,
And just listen to her purr.

Autumn Dawn

An autumn dawn

An autumn dawn, dew on the lawn,
The sun yet to reclaim the sky,
A gentle breeze, swaying the trees,
The birds yet to start to fly.

A leaf falls, a bird calls,
The quietness passing away,
Fading night, Fresh dawn light,
The world wakens to another day.

New Dawn Rising

A new dawn brings hope and forgiveness

As a new dawn chases away the darkness of the night bringing light back into our lives, so forgiveness can take away the anger of our life and bring a brightness back to our spirit. Both of these enrich who we are and bring the promise of a better life. This poem considers these thoughts:

New Dawn Rising

A new dawn rising bringing a new life to live,
Angers darkness fading, as you learn to forgive.
The sun of enlightenment touches fears far hills,
The light of hopefulness into your heart now spills.
A new warmth coming as your cold night fades away,
The freshness of dreams as you awaken to this day.

The shadows of doubt fade as the sun sends its light,
Enlightening a future, so clear and so bright.
The certainty of today now shines high above,
The emptiness of yesterday now filled with love.
And so with this new dawn, a new life will begin,
One of hope, joy and happiness, where you can win

Autumn arrival

Autumn has arrived with all of it beauty

The seasons provide a rich source for poetry, from the gentleness of a sunny spring day to a raging winter storm. Nature itself providing all of the inspiration required by the observation of what the season provides. This poem looks at the early stages of Autumn and what you are likely to experience during this season:

The sun setting slowly, painting red across the sky,
The swallows migrating, towards the south they fly.
The leaves start turning, to shades of yellow, orange and red,
Landing softly upon the ground, a carpet for you to tread.

Morning dew descending, resting lightly upon the grass,
A touch of frost may follow, but it will not yet last.
Apples hanging on the bough, ripe and ready to eat,
Squirrels harvesting away the nuts for their winter treat.

The last of summer flowers now giving their final show,
Before the releasing of their petals upon the wind to blow.
Red berries on the bushes, autumns harvest there to reap,
A gentle stillness upon the land, as nature goes to sleep.

Remember that this too shall pass (poem)

Remember that this too shall pass

Remember that this too shall pass,
And that this pain will fade away.
Like a breeze though the swaying grass,
Gently it will sweep through today.
Leaving behind a new calmness,
Refreshed from the departing storm.
And in that quietness and stillness,
Your inner soul can now reform.

Yesterday’s pain has gone forever,
Even if the echoes are still heard.
But with this change in the weather,
It becomes the song of a bird.
Calling out to you to stand up,
And face tomorrow’s path with glee.
To drink deep from hopes healing cup,
Start walking and set your life free.

Into the new that is now calling,
Gently within, tender and sweet.
To where the blossom is falling,
A carpet for your tired feet.
The light shines into tomorrow,
The darkness of the past departs.
With each step you leave your sorrow,
As your journey to hope, restarts.
